Now, all during our trip through China all of us Americans have -
believe it or not - been asked by the Chinese to have their photo taken with
us... Kathy and I were particularly popular and we found out it was because of
our blond hair! Bu t why this lady
was so insistent to have her photo taken with Bill we can't figure, other than
he sure is a handsome guy!! Turns out she was the president of a lingerie
company that was in the planning stage of a big fashion show at the hotel next
month...several of the models were there and practicing on the walkway. Of
course I handed out Lindsay and Lace business cards to everyone, and encouraged
them to follow this fashion trend setter from LA !!
Monday
Day Eight
Upon arriving back at the hotel and feeling the need to have a cup
of tea and relax, we went over to the outside cafe by the river and had a seat.
Next thing you know, this older very well dressed Chinese lady jumps from her
chair at the table next to us, grabs an empty chair and shoves it right next to
Bill. She is waving her hands instructing her companion to take her photo with
him. Over and over in this pose and that. Bill's wondering if she thinks he is
the Pakistani President hahahaha...
Tuesday
Day Nine
We
had the whole morning to tour around Shanghai but...of course nothing was open
due to the Asian conference of heavy hitters. In fact, when we wanted to leave
the hotel, we couldn't, as the Pakistani President was about to leave also, so
the entire hotel was in shut down mode. Finally he appeared with his army of
body guards and rows upon rows of big black cars...after they all roared out of
the driveway everyone's shoulders relaxed and life returned to normal.
We
had an hour to spare before we needed to go to the airport so we headed over to
the Oriental Pearl Tower - a rather "Meet the Jetsons"
type of architecture which is 121 floors tall. (We could see this building
outside our hotel window as it was across the river, and at night colorful neon
lights sprinkle up and down the tower.) We road the elevator way up to the Observatory's
Sky deck where, if it hadn't been cloudy and rainy, our view would have
been magnificent. As it was, we could still see far across the city. Bill
bravely stepped onto the 360 degree wrap around glass bottomed panel...not me!
First
you wait in a short line, then are escorted to the elevator.
Wednesday
Day Ten
OMG
we both woke up at around 2am. I
thought our hotel room had suddenly been relocated above a parking garage rumble
rumble rumble. Bill thought a construction project had begun directly
outside our window bang bang bang. We got up and opened the drapes to
see what was going on, and witnessed a sharply bright & brilliant show of
lightening, accompanied by the loudest rolling thunder we've ever heard. Even
though the rain was pouring down powerfully, the lightening was breaking
through in a crackling theatrical display.
Needless
to say it was not a peaceful evening, but we were rewarded when we entered the
breakfast buffet where lo & behold there piled high in the iced juice
section were jars of fresh watermelon juice (our latest obsession) and every
type of food choice imaginable.
Thursday
Day Eleven
Today, Thursday, is our last day in China ...we take a midnight flight
home to Los Angeles ,
and arrive on the SAME DAY at 11pm! Everyone we talk to says "If you think
the jet lag is bad GOING to Asia , it's 10
times worse upon your return". We will see...
Today we decided to roam around in some air conditioned stores and
pick up something special for our delightful, wonderful, and precious
children. Bill is a big believer in buying something nice as a memory of a
trip well enjoyed! He was also dying to return to a store he and his father and
brother shopped at back in the early 1990's when they were visiting Hong Kong regularly on business: King & Country,
which sells tiny metal collectible soldiers.
Lucky for ME, this store was in the Pacific Place Mall... a
glorious bright and cheerful mall with a mix of high and middle end stores, as
well as the British department stores Mark & Spencer, and Harvey Nichols
(what a food court!).
